How to Play Baccarat

The objective: You are not playing your own hand. You are betting on which of two hands — called Player and Banker — will be closest to a total of 9. That’s it. There are no decisions to make during the hand. You place your bet, the cards are dealt, and the result is determined automatically.

Card values:

• Aces count as 1
• Cards 2 through 9 count at face value
• 10s, Jacks, Queens, and Kings all count as 0

How totals work: If a hand’s total exceeds 9, only the second digit is used. So a hand of 7 and 8 totals 15, but in baccarat that hand is worth 5. A hand of 9 and 9 totals 18 but is worth 8. This is why baccarat hands can never exceed 9 — it’s mathematically impossible.

The deal: Both the Player and Banker start with two cards each. Depending on the totals of those two cards, a third card may be drawn for either or both hands. You do not decide whether a third card is drawn — the game follows fixed rules that determine this automatically. As a player you never need to know these rules in detail. The software or dealer handles it every single time.

Who wins: The hand closest to 9 wins. If both hands have the same total, the result is a Tie.

Available Bets at a Baccarat Table

Banker Bet

The Banker bet is, in my view, the single best recurring bet available at any standard casino table game. The Banker hand wins slightly more often than the Player hand because of the way the third card drawing rules work — the Banker draws based on what the Player has already drawn, giving it a marginal mathematical advantage.

The house edge on the Banker bet is 1.06%. To offset this, casinos charge a 5% commission on all Banker wins. So if you bet ₱1,000 on Banker and win, you receive ₱950. This commission is what makes the Banker bet profitable for the casino despite being the statistically superior bet for you as the player.

Across a long session, betting Banker consistently is the closest thing to a mathematically sound strategy that baccarat offers.

Player Bet

The Player bet carries a house edge of 1.24% — slightly higher than Banker but still excellent compared to most casino games. No commission is charged on Player wins. A winning ₱1,000 Player bet returns ₱2,000 (your stake plus ₱1,000 profit).

Some players I know prefer the Player bet precisely because there’s no commission calculation — what you see is what you get. The difference in house edge between Banker and Player is small enough that Player remains a solid bet throughout any session.

Tie Bet

The Tie bet pays 8:1 when both hands finish with the same total. On paper this sounds attractive. In reality, the Tie bet carries a house edge of 14.4% — one of the worst bets in any mainstream casino game.

To put that in perspective: the Banker bet costs you ₱1.06 per ₱100 wagered over time. The Tie bet costs you ₱14.40 per ₱100 wagered. Players who regularly include Tie bets in their sessions are losing nearly 14 times more to the house than those who stick to Banker or Player.

The Tie bet is best avoided completely. The occasional win feels exciting but the long-term cost is severe.

Player Pair and Banker Pair

These are side bets available at most baccarat tables. A Pair bet wins if the first two cards dealt to either the Player hand or the Banker hand form a matching pair — for example two Kings or two 5s. The payout is 11:1.

The house edge on both Pair bets sits around 10–11%. Like the Tie bet, these carry a significantly higher house edge than the main bets. They’re enjoyable as an occasional addition to your session but shouldn’t form part of any regular betting pattern if you’re playing with your bankroll in mind.

Perfect Pair

A stricter version of the Pair bet where the two cards must match in both value and suit — for example two King of Hearts. Pays higher than a standard Pair but carries an even larger house edge. Strictly an entertainment bet.

Either Pair

A combined bet that wins if either the Player or Banker hand produces a pair on the first two cards. Lower payout than betting a specific pair but wins more frequently.

Baccarat Variants Online

Punto Banco — Standard Baccarat

This is baccarat as most Filipino players know it. When someone tells me they play baccarat online, they mean Punto Banco. All the rules described in this guide apply directly to Punto Banco. Mini Baccarat

Mini Baccarat is Punto Banco played on a smaller table with lower betting limits and a faster pace. The rules are identical — the only differences are the table size, the lower minimums, and the fact that the dealer handles the cards rather than players being invited to squeeze them.

Squeeze Baccarat

In Squeeze Baccarat, the dealer slowly bends and reveals the cards rather than turning them over immediately. This builds tension and theatre around each hand — the gradual reveal of whether a card is high or low, then the final confirmation of its value, creates genuine excitement that flat card reveals don’t.

The odds are identical to standard Punto Banco. Squeeze is pure entertainment value layered on top of the same game. Available at Evolution and Pragmatic Play live tables.

No Commission Baccarat

No Commission Baccarat removes the 5% commission charged on Banker wins. Instead, it restructures the payout when the Banker wins with a total of 6 — in this scenario, Banker bets pay only 50% rather than full odds. On all other Banker wins, the payout is 1:1 with no commission deducted.

The overall house edge under this structure is similar to standard baccarat. The appeal is simplicity — no commission calculation needed, and winnings feel more straightforward. Popular at tables where the 5% commission calculation causes confusion or slows the game.

Bet Banker as your default

The 0.18% difference in house edge between Banker (1.06%) and Player (1.24%) is small in any single session. Over hundreds of sessions it becomes meaningful. Banker is statistically the better bet every single time. Commission included, it remains the superior choice.

Never bet Tie as a regular strategy

The 8:1 payout is not worth the 14.4% house edge. If you include Tie bets regularly in your sessions you are paying a severe premium for occasional excitement. Reserve it for a single speculative bet if you choose — never make it a regular part of how you play.

Set a session limit and stick to it

Baccarat is a fast game. At live dealer speed, you can easily play 50–80 hands per hour. At ₱200 per hand, that’s ₱10,000–₱16,000 wagered per hour even at modest stakes. Ignore betting systems
